Cael's Famous Dahl
This recipe is something of a legend in the circles I run in. It has been served up many a time at various dinner parties and social events, invariably garnering praise and recipe requests from all in attendance. With the gracious support of its originator, Cael Mitchell, this much sought-after recipe is reproduced here in it raw, unadulterated form (including its Mitchellian EMPHASIS):

Ingredients
HERE IS MY ROUGH DAHL; experiment as you want!
- 1 onion
- 3 cloves garlic
- 250-300g red lentils
- 100-200ml coconut milk/cream
- 1 tin tomato
- 2 tbsp curry powder
- 2 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp coriander seed powder
- 1 cube/tsp chicken stock
- 2-3 tbsp TAMARI or soy sauce
- 1 tin of whatever beans you WANT
- salt and pepper!
Method
So yeah, this is how I do it:
1. chop, then cook onions until brown, then add garlic for a minute or so
2. add the spices and let them cook off for 1-2 mins
3. put in tinned tomatos and coconut milk, mix them around,
4. THEN put in the red lentils, with the stock and around 500ml of water (THE WATER IS IMPORTANT AND I FORGOT, IT MAKES THE LENTILS BREAK DOWN), and add the rest of the ingredients
5. bring the lentils to boil (or close to), and then reduce heat to simmer for at least 20 mins, cooking more to have a sloosh-y-er Dhal
6. add salt and pepper to taste
7. so when you add in the lentils you can add in literally any other vegetable, carrots, peas, potato, beans, ANYTHING
(added by hugo) This recipe is often cooked in bulk, in fact doing so may even be obligatory, so invite some friends over for a bowl of dahl and a game of secret hitler. It is also typically served with rice and sambal oelek - ENJOY!
